A Day in the Life of a Teacher in Quarantine

-

My mother, Amanda Senanayake, is a 4th and 5th grade bilingual teacher in New Jersey’s East Orange School District.

She became fluent in Spanish after spending a gap year in Venezuela on a Rotary International scholarship. She earned a bachelor’s  degree in Spanish and elementary education at the University of Rhode Island, then her master’s degree in Applied Linguistics, with an ESL certification, at Montclair State University, and bilingual certification at William Paterson University.

She has been teaching for 12 years.

Takeaway:
Producing this piece not only clued me in to the hardships that all teachers are experiencing with remote learning, but also showed me how it is 10 times harder for both students and teachers to operate in underfunded school districts. From trying to get their students access to basic wifi, to helping them complete assignments on just their parents’ cell phones, teachers in school districts like these go above and beyond to provide an equal education for their students.
