My mother, Amanda Senanayake, is a 4th and 5th grade bilingual teacher in New Jersey’s East Orange School District.
She became fluent in Spanish after spending a gap year in Venezuela on a Rotary International scholarship. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and elementary education at the University of Rhode Island, then her master’s degree in Applied Linguistics, with an ESL certification, at Montclair State University, and bilingual certification at William Paterson University.
She has been teaching for 12 years.
