One of the first indigenous tribes to encounter European colonists, the Ramapough Lenape community protects over a thousand years of Lenape history. Located in Mahwah, New Jersey, the community’s history is reflected in the naming of local streets and Ramapo College.

 

The tribe struggles to win recognition, and respect.

 

 

The members of the tribe suffer from a lack of federal acknowledgment, and a lack of autonomy over the management of their reservation.

 

The tribe also battles corporate pipelines, and copes with court rulings against worship at Split Rock Sweetwater Prayer Camp, a centuries-old Lenape place of worship.
